Michigan Removes Test for Foreign Nurses

Philippine nurses who plan to work in Michigan no longer have to take exams conducted by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). A bill signed by Michigan Governer Jennifer Ganholm on June 14 requires foreign nurses to pass only the National Council Licensure Exam to be eligible to work in the state.

Nurses now opting to work in RP call centers, as medical transcriptionists

Many Filipino nurses are now opting to stay in the country, not to work in hospitals but in call centers.

The local recruitment industry reported yesterday that a number of licensed nurses are now employed either as call center agents or medical transcriptionists, which offer higher salaries than government-run or even private-owned hospitals in the country.

No nurse surplus, only unqualified graduates--recruiters

Unfilled 20,000 job orders for nurses, they say

MANILA, Philippines -- There is no surplus of 400,000 nurses in the country, but a dearth of qualified nurses that employers abroad would hire, the recruitment industry said Monday.

The reaction was to the earlier statement of Commissioner Ruth Padilla of the Professional Regulation Commission that the surplus was enough to meet the requirements of Saudi Arabia, Canada, the United States, and Europe.

10,000 Filipino nurses took US licensure test -- labor group

A total of 9,837 Filipinos took the United States licensure examination for nurses for the first time from January to June 2008, indicating they wanted to seek employment in America, former Senator Ernesto Herrera, general secretary of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines, said in a press statement Saturday.

Herrera said the number of Filipino nurses who took the NCLEX and implicitly sought jobs in the US in the first semester was roughly steady -- just 107 shy of the year-ago takers. He said a total of 9,944 Filipino nurses took the examination in the first half of 2007.

27,765 pass June 2008 nursing board exam

MANILA, Philippines -- A total of 27,765 or 43.07 percent of the 64,459 who took the nursing licensure exam last June 1 and 2 passed it, the Board of Nursing of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) said Thursday evening.

"Congratulations to those who passed," said BoN member Dean Marco Sto. Tomas.

More than 100 examinees made it to the top 10, he said.

Nursing still most preferred course

Nursing is still the most preferred course in college, despite the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) approval of a new guideline that school administrators claimed will burden students and their parents.

CHED approved last month a new guideline for the Nursing curriculum that college administrators said will cause more harm than good to students.

CHED issued Memorandum Order No. 5 that mandates Nursing schools to increase the number of units in the Bachelor of Science Nursing curriculum to improve the passing rate of Nursing graduates.
